Introduction

The Blue Mountain WILD School (BMWS) is a fully accredited private elementary school with a focus on experiential education and wilderness integrated leadership development located in the Blue Mountains, Ontario. During July- August, BMWS offers day camps for youth ages 4-12. Our WILD Camp Programs run Monday to Friday from July 1st to August 19th, 2024 – 9am to 4 pm.

Opportunity

We are seeking a multi-talented and creative Camp Director to oversee camp operations and programming. This will include managing logistics, and supporting our program staff as they carry out their daily roles.

The Camp Director will provide big energy to the camp environment while building and fostering positive relationships with client families and assist in maintaining a strong camper-focused and educational culture. Your contract will run from June 17th to August 26th. Additional future employment opportunities may become available.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in scheduling activities for multiple groups while maintaining staffing ratios and operating procedures.
  • Manage instructors and LIT’s, ensuring that they are delivering fun, educational programs in a safe and supportive environment. This includes daily morning meetings and end of day debriefs as well as individual check ins with each instructor throughout the summer.
  • Create programming for instructors based on the daily/weekly thematic.
  • Be the face of the camp and bring a positive and personable attitude and demeanour to all communications with parents, instructors and campers to provide excellent customer service.
  • Continuous communication with the Executive Director and the Director of Teaching and Learning.
  • Maintain client communication and rapport by greeting families in the parking lot at the start and end of each day, as well as communicate via phone, email or text where required.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants and staff by following BMWS policies and procedures.
  • When necessary, support the delivery of programming by stepping into a Camp Instructor role.
  • Asist in organizing and facilitating staff training for Camp Instructors and Leaders In Training during the week of June 24th.

Requirements

  • Backcountry / Adventure skills including: camping, canoeing, and mountain biking
  • Passionate about outdoor / experiential learning and outdoor education
  • Creative, energetic and fun characteristics
  • Excellent interpersonal and pragmatic skills
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Good initiative and ability to see what needs to be completed
  • Team Player
  • Experience in backcountry guiding and tripping an asset

Qualifications

  • Minimum Two (2) years of management experience, preferably in a camp or outdoor education setting.
  • Minimum Three (3) years of experience as a Camp Counsellor (preferably at an overnight camp) or equivalent experience leading student groups in an outdoor setting.
  • Advanced First Aid & CPR certification – Wilderness First Aid an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership position supervising a team, organizing schedules and program logistics, managing risk and responding to incidents.
  • Experience in a variety of outdoor activities (canoe, bike, hike, paddle board).
  • PMBI – Mountain Bike Instructor L1, 2, or 3 is an asset.

Additional Information

As a condition of employment, a valid Police Records Check (for working with the Vulnerable Sector) completed within the last 6 months is required prior to commencing work.

Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience and ranges from $220-$250 per day.

Potential end of summer bonus potential upon successful completion of the summer.
